Author Talk: Dr. Bettye Kearse — The Other Madisons

January 22 @ 6:30 pm7:30 pm

Drawing on eight generations of family oral history, Dr. Bettye Kearse —a writer and retired pediatrician who practiced in Dorchester for 31 years—traces her lineage to an enslaved cook and her enslaver, President James Madison. For thousands of years, West African griots and griottes have preserved their peoples’ histories through oral storytelling. Kearse is her family’s oral historian, the author of this acclaimed memoir, The Other Madisons , and is currently working on a book on Rebecca Crumpler, To Mitigate the Suffering of Others: Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the First Black Woman Doctor. Dr. Kearse will speak to us from New Mexico over Zoom. Join the conversation from Weld Hall at the Hyde Park Branch or email mmakkouk@bpl.org for the Zoom link.
