DESCRIPTION:Presented by Artists-at-Large with longtime friends and collaborators at ArtsAmica — Havana in Hyde Park Revisited — will delve back into the world of Cuban art\, featuring painting\, drawing and printmaking. Artists-at-Large and ArtsAmica have co-hosted recurring\, Havana in Hyde Park\, exhibits for many years and wanted to honor and celebrate this amazing work they have been able to bring to the community. Havana in Hyde Park Revisited will feature some previously exhibited pieces along with some work not seen here before. ArtsAmica was established in 1996 and has been bringing artwork to the United States from Cuba since its inception. The organization works to support the artists of Cuba directly. Artists-at-Large has worked with ArtsAmica since 2002. \nAbout Cuban Art \nCuban art is a vibrant and diverse expression of the island’s rich cultural heritage\, influenced by its history\, politics\, and social changes. It encompasses a wide range of artistic forms\, including painting\, sculpture\, music\, dance\, and performance. \nCuban art has evolved significantly since the colonial period\, where European influences dominated. The early 20th century saw the emergence of modernism\, with artists like Wilfredo Lam incorporating Afro-Cuban themes and surrealism into their work. The African diaspora has profoundly shaped Cuban art\, particularly in music and visual arts. Artists often explore themes of identity\, spirituality\, and the blending of cultures through their work. \nThe Cuban Revolution of 1959 also had a significant impact on the art scene. The government promoted art as a means of fostering national identity and social change\, leading to the establishment of institutions that supported artists. This era produced politically charged works that reflected revolutionary ideals. \nToday\, Cuban artists continue to gain international recognition. They experiment with various media\, including installation and performance art. Artists like Tania Bruguera and Los Carpinteros challenge societal norms and explore themes of power\, identity\, and globalization. Key institutions\, such as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana\, play an essential role in preserving and promoting Cuban art. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 12\, 2024\, 7 – 9 pm\nFeaturing Kevin Gallagher\, Magdalena Gomez\, and Vijaya Sundaram\n\n \nKevin Gallagher is a poet\, publisher and political economist living in the Greater Boston Area.  His latest books are And Yet it Moves and The Wild Goose.  Gallagher edits\, spoKe\, a boston-based annual of poetry and poetics.  He works as a professor of global development policy at Boston University. \n\nMagdalena Gómez\, Poet Laureate of Springfield\, MA (2019-2022) and an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow (2021-2022) has been a cultural worker since 1976. Her memoir noir\, Mi’ja\, received the 2024 International Latino Book Award\, in the autobiography category. In 2019 she received the Latinas 50 Plus Literature Award at Fordham University and the Latinx Excellence on the Hill Award from the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus of MA at the State House. Her solo play on iconoclastic Puerto Rican labor leader\, activist\, feminist and journalist Luisa Capetillo\, (October 28\, 1879 – April 10\, 1922) is included in The Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance (2024). Ms. Gómez has been a volunteer writer for An African American Point of View for over fourteen years. She was the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Springfield’s first intergenerational Latinx theater\, Teatro V!da and the youth open mic series\, Ign!te the M!c – from 2006 – 2020. She also initiated and helped launch the first public  LGBTQIA2S+ open mic series in Western Massachusetts at the Bing Arts Center. She is currently working on the sequel to her memoir\, a new collection of poetry\, and a new multi-media solo show based on her memoir. Ms. Gómez is currently a Commissioner with the Massachusetts Commission in the Status of Women for Hampden County and a Trustee with the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts.  www.mijamemoir.com \n\n\n\n\nVijaya Sundaram is the current Poet Laureate (2023-2025) for the City of Medford\, Massachusetts.  Originally from India\, she lived in Arlington\, MA\, for ten years\, and has been living in Medford since 2001.  She has written short stories\, plays and a short novel (not yet published).  She is also a guitarist\, sitarist\, songwriter\, singer\, amateur digital artist\, and educator.  Her poetry and short pieces have appeared in publications like The Rising Phoenix Press\, the Stardust Review\, and TELL Magazine\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Description\n\nArtists-at-Large is pleased to announce that photographer Don West will be on exhibit at the Hyde Park Branch Library. Featuring photographs from Cuba\, Israel\, France and China\, the work of Don West honors our global diversity and individual histories. A storyteller at heart\, West writes; “Let us tell of a people’s history through shared stories\, song\, and visual memories.” Photographs are the means by which West shares these stories with the world\, celebrating exemplary leaders –– both unsung and internationally renowned –– and promoting social justice and shared understanding. \nPresented by Artists-at-Large\, Images International by Don West will be on display from November 16 to December 31\, 2024. \nThere will be a reception for the artist on Saturday\, November 16\, 2024 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. \n  \nArtist’s Statement: \nDon West grew up in Brookline\, Massachusetts\, attended Brookline High School and studied math at Morgan State University in Baltimore\, Maryland. In the 1960s\, West studied with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi\, and was a professional bass guitarist. He taught transcendental meditation in Detroit\, Michigan throughout the 1970s. \nWest began his career as a freelance and news photographer working for United Press International (UPI) and the Bay State Banner\, Boston’s black weekly paper. He has since gone on to a host of photojournalistic assignments that have taken him throughout the United States\, Latin America\, Africa\, China\, Europe and the Middle East. \nHe is particularly proud to have served as Nelson Mandela’s photographer when he first visited Boston after release from prison\, in South Africa; the official photographer for Mel King’s historic “Rainbow Coalition” Mayoral campaign; and to be called upon to cover special events of Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign in New England. \nWest is a member of numerous organizations\, including: National Press Photographers\, Boston Press Photographers and National Association of Black Journalists and is a Resident Artist in the African American Master Artists-in-Residence Program at Northeastern University in Boston. DESCRIPTION:2nd Thursday Poetry Reading with Danielle Legros Georges and Nakia Hill \n\nThis free poetry reading at the MAC will have an Open Mic before the featured speakers. \nDanielle Legros Georges is a poet\, literary translator\, and editor whose work has been supported by fellowships from the American Antiquarian Society\, the PEN/Heim Translation Fund\, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Boston Foundation\, and the Black Metropolis Research Consortium. She was appointed Boston’s second Laureate in 2014\, and has authored several books of poetry including The Dear Remote Nearness of You; Island Heart\, translations of the poems of 20th-century Haitian-French poet Ida Faubert; Wheatley at 250: Black Women Poets Re-imagine the Verse of Phillis Wheatley Peters; and most recently Blue Flare: Three Haitian Poets (translations\, Zephyr Press\, 2024); and the forthcoming Three Leaves\, Three Roots: Poems on the Haiti-Congo Story (Beacon Press\, 2025). https://www.daniellelegrosgeorges.com \nNakia Hill is a writer\, poet\, journalist\, and educator.
