SUMMARY:My Guide to Feeling It All: An Informal Showing
DESCRIPTION:My Guide to Feeling It All: An Informal Showing \nCome feel it all during this evening of contemporary dance \nAbout this Event \nWe spend time trying to escape\, control\, or even understand emotions. What if instead of hiding from feelings\, we invited them in? \nMy Guide to Feeling It All is an intricate movement tapestry portraying the wide range of human emotion created by Angelina Benitez in collaboration with Alexandria Nunweiler and Katrina Conte. This contemporary dance work challenges the societal norms that often encourage us to suppress or compartmentalize our feelings\, instead celebrating the beauty of authenticity while inviting viewers to embrace their own identities and express their emotions without fear or judgment. \nThroughout this approximately 30-min performance\, the dancers embody the intersection of shame and pride\, love and grief\, anxiety and excitement\, carefully holding space for the many contradictions and paradoxes that make up the human experience. Adam Matthew’s original composition blends ballads\, acoustic guitar interludes\, and electric guitar jams to match the range of emotion presented physically. \nThe evening begins with a chocolate meditation (do we have your interest piqued?) followed by a prelude of community-built choreography made during workshop series. The performance will be followed by a short Q&A with the students and artists. \nCome feel it all. \nThis presentation is made possible in part by a Community Building Mini Grant from the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. \nAbout the Choreographer: \nANGELINA BENITEZ graduated from Salem State University with a B.A in both Modern/Contemporary Dance and has since studied at Bates Dance Festival and continues to study with local Boston-based artists. Her choreography at Salem State was presented at Boston’s American College Dance Association Conference and earned her a Presidential Arts Scholarship and a Creativity Award in Dance. Angie has immersed herself in teaching dance in the Greater Boston area at local studios\, schools\, and residencies. Her recent performance experience includes local arts festivals and events such as Verse / Visual\, 24 Hour ChoreoFest\, Salem Arts Festival\, Art Walk with Luminarium\, and more. Much of her work is focused on collaboration. When she’s not teaching dance\, you can find her working as a social media strategist\, creating fiber art\, and taking pole dance classes. \nAbout the Dancers: \nALEXANDRIA NUNWEILER is a contemporary choreographer\, performer\, administrator and educator based in Boston\, MA. Her movement is rooted in history\, human experience\, and the fine line between darkness and humor. Alexandria earned her B.A. in Dance from Winthrop University. Alexandria works within The Click and with Alive Dance Collective as the Director of Development\, performer and choreographer. She currently teaches at Creative Steps Dance Studio in Newton\, MA and is a recurring guest artist at Dance Theatre of Greenville in South Carolina. \nKATRINA CONTE is a dancer and choreographer based in Boston MA. She attended the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts in Mt Pocono PA. Katrina graduated with her BFA in Dance with a minor in Technical Theater from Ball State University. She is working administratively at the Boston Center for the Arts and dancing with The Click\, Alive Dance Collective and Luminarium Dance. \nAbout the Musician: \nADAM MATTHEW is a guitarist and songwriter local to the North Shore. He’s been playing and performing for over 20 years. He has studied music at the New School in New York and with artists including David Schumacher and Joel Yennior. A resident of Newburyport for many years\, Adam has played at many local favorites such as the Grog\, The Barking Dog\, The Sunset Club\, Plum Island Grille\, and the Grove at the Briar Bar Inn. \nAbout The Click: \nDeveloped in 2021\, The Click is a collaborative dance company and creative collective in Greater Boston. Its members are dancers whose primary medium of physical expression is through contemporary dance forms\, but who experiment in many modes and genres of creativity. As a collective\, The Click’s members are each deeply invested in answering the universally complex question: who am I and what am I doing here? \nThe Click contributes to the consistent presence of creativity in Boston and beyond in several ways: by educating pre-professional youth dancers\, professional adult dancers and the dance-curious of any age; performing original creations several times a year at traditional and non-traditional venues across Massachusetts\, New England and beyond; and by investing in the curiosity of those new to dance in Boston or new to dance in general by maintaining an open\, inclusive and accessible community. \nFollow us on Instagram: @the.click.boston

DESCRIPTION:Description\n\nArtists-at-Large is pleased to announce that photographer Don West will be on exhibit at the Hyde Park Branch Library. Featuring photographs from Cuba\, Israel\, France and China\, the work of Don West honors our global diversity and individual histories. A storyteller at heart\, West writes; “Let us tell of a people’s history through shared stories\, song\, and visual memories.” Photographs are the means by which West shares these stories with the world\, celebrating exemplary leaders –– both unsung and internationally renowned –– and promoting social justice and shared understanding. \nPresented by Artists-at-Large\, Images International by Don West will be on display from November 16 to December 31\, 2024. \nThere will be a reception for the artist on Saturday\, November 16\, 2024 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. \n  \nArtist’s Statement: \nDon West grew up in Brookline\, Massachusetts\, attended Brookline High School and studied math at Morgan State University in Baltimore\, Maryland. In the 1960s\, West studied with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi\, and was a professional bass guitarist. He taught transcendental meditation in Detroit\, Michigan throughout the 1970s. \nWest began his career as a freelance and news photographer working for United Press International (UPI) and the Bay State Banner\, Boston’s black weekly paper. He has since gone on to a host of photojournalistic assignments that have taken him throughout the United States\, Latin America\, Africa\, China\, Europe and the Middle East. \nHe is particularly proud to have served as Nelson Mandela’s photographer when he first visited Boston after release from prison\, in South Africa; the official photographer for Mel King’s historic “Rainbow Coalition” Mayoral campaign; and to be called upon to cover special events of Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign in New England. \nWest is a member of numerous organizations\, including: National Press Photographers\, Boston Press Photographers and National Association of Black Journalists and is a Resident Artist in the African American Master Artists-in-Residence Program at Northeastern University in Boston. In 2012\, West founded Blackwire News Service\, a wire service for people of color worldwide. \nProceeds of sales to benefit Central Boston Elder Services. DESCRIPTION:2nd Thursday Poetry Reading with Danielle Legros Georges and Nakia Hill \n\nThis free poetry reading at the MAC will have an Open Mic before the featured speakers. \nDanielle Legros Georges is a poet\, literary translator\, and editor whose work has been supported by fellowships from the American Antiquarian Society\, the PEN/Heim Translation Fund\, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Boston Foundation\, and the Black Metropolis Research Consortium. She was appointed Boston’s second Laureate in 2014\, and has authored several books of poetry including The Dear Remote Nearness of You; Island Heart\, translations of the poems of 20th-century Haitian-French poet Ida Faubert; Wheatley at 250: Black Women Poets Re-imagine the Verse of Phillis Wheatley Peters; and most recently Blue Flare: Three Haitian Poets (translations\, Zephyr Press\, 2024); and the forthcoming Three Leaves\, Three Roots: Poems on the Haiti-Congo Story (Beacon Press\, 2025). https://www.daniellelegrosgeorges.com \nNakia Hill is a writer\, poet\, journalist\, and educator.
