DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening of jazz with Alex Minasian Trio. Their musical selections will honor the legends of jazz music\, including Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk\, as well as music from the Great American Songbook. The trio includes pianist Alex Minasian\, bassist John Sullivan\, and drummer Lee Fish. \nAlex Minasian was the last pianist for legendary vocalists Little Jimmy Scott and Mark Murphy. He has studied with some of the greatest pianists in jazz history\, including Hank Jones\, Don Friedman\, Jean-Michel Pilc and James Williams\, and has performed in many of the country’s most famous jazz rooms\, such as Birdland\, the Blue Note\, Cafe Carlyle\, Yoshi’s\, Bohemian Caverns Iridium\, Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, the Village Vanguard and the Apollo Theater. \nThis programming is supported through the generosity of donors to the BPL Fund and its Branching-Out Creative Catalyst Mini-Grant Program. Alvarez is the author of the poetry collection Makeshift Altar (2024) and the co-editor of Essential Voices: A COVID-19 Anthology(2023). Selected as one of 2022’s Best New Poets\, her poetry has appeared in Ploughshares\, The Missouri Review\, Alaska Quarterly Review\, Poetry Foundation\, Colorado Review\, and elsewhere. She has been awarded fellowships from CantoMundo\, VONA\, Macondo\, the Virginia Creative Arts Center\, and the Furious Flower Poetry Center. In 2022\, she was inducted as an Affrilachian Poet. Amy was born in New York City to Jamaican and Puerto Rican parents. She has taught at high schools in the Bronx\, New York\, and Boston\, Massachusetts\, and at West Virginia University. SUMMARY:Eric Royer’s One Man Band and Homefried Valentines
DESCRIPTION:Eric Royer\, long time Dorchester resident\, has performed as Royer’s One-Man Band since the mid-90s. He has recorded and traveled extensively after building his one-of-a-kind self-made music contraption The Guitar Machine which allows him to play guitar\, bass and drums while picking finger style guitar or banjo with his hands and singing and playing harmonica. Royer has won a Boston music award for Best Roots Act as the banjo player in his band The Resophonics and has played and recorded with many Boston based bluegrass bands. http://guitarmachine.com \nHomefried Valentines are a husband and wife duo playing original music with an eclectic Pop/Rock vibe on a combination of instruments – electric tenor ukulele\, electric guitar\, and cocktail kit drums. Musicians Michael and Carla Eigen have each been nominated for local Boston music awards.  The New England Music Awards nominated Michael Eigen for Roots Act of the Year as a singer-songwriter and drummer for the band Los Goutos.  Carla Eigen was a nominee for Outstanding Local Female Vocalist by the Boston Music Awards as the front woman for the band Sextiles. Both Michael and Carla have been active members in the local Boston scene for 20+ years in various separate projects prior to spinning off to create a post pandemic duo. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time. Meet four visitors\, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-traveling offer\, to: confront the man who left them\, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early-onset Alzheimer’s\, to see their sister one last time\, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know. DESCRIPTION:Magdalena Gómez\, Poet Laureate of Springfield\, MA (2019-2022) and an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow (2021-2022) has been a cultural worker since 1976. Her memoir noir\, Mi’ja\, received the 2024 International Latino Book Award\, in the autobiography category. In 2019 she received the Latinas 50 Plus Literature Award at Fordham University and the Latinx Excellence on the Hill Award from the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus of MA at the State House. Her solo play on iconoclastic Puerto Rican labor leader\, activist\, feminist and journalist Luisa Capetillo\, (October 28\, 1879 – April 10\, 1922) is included in The Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance (2024). Ms. Gómez has been a volunteer writer for An African American Point of View for over fourteen years. She was the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Springfield’s first intergenerational Latinx theater\, Teatro V!da and the youth open mic series\, Ign!te the M!c – from 2006 – 2020. She also initiated and helped launch the first public  LGBTQIA2S+ open mic series in Western Massachusetts at the Bing Arts Center. She is currently working on the sequel to her memoir\, a new collection of poetry\, and a new multi-media solo show based on her memoir. Ms. Gómez is currently a Commissioner with the Massachusetts Commission in the Status of Women for Hampden County and a Trustee with the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts.  www.mijamemoir.com \nLinda Carney-Goodrich\,is a writer and teacher from Boston. She is the author of Dot Girl (Nixes Mate Books\, 2024) which was a finalist for New England Poetry Club’s 2024 Sheila Margaret Motton Book Prize. A Brother Thomas Fellow\, she was recognized by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for her contributions to arts\, wellness\, and inclusivity. Her poetic documentary\, Reclamation: This is My Country\, This is My Land\, premiered at Boston’s We Create Festival in 2024\, delving into themes of grief\, ancestral ties\, and land reclamation. As founder of The Maoko Project\, she merges art\, education\, and healing. She also serves on the board of Mass Poetry\, Zimbabwe Poets Society. A sample of collaborators she has worked with include Castle of Our Skins\, Danza Organica\, Center for New Americans and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, fostering dialogue between Boston’s literary and artistic communities and the African diaspora. We will use our senses to explore natural objects and then spend time using different drawing techniques to capture the beauty of the natural world on paper. Participants are invited to bring in natural materials to work with\, but this is not required as there will be many natural objects provided by Audubon. Reception 6/14/25 \nThe imagery of the island comes alive in these prints from Cuba in the second of four\ninstallments of Havana in Hyde Park Revisited\, a year-long series of exhibits from the\ncollection of ArtsAmica and Holliey White\, on view until June 30. ArtsAmica was\nestablished in 1996 and has been bringing artwork to the United States from Cuba and\nworking to support the artists of Cuba directly ever since. Artists-at-Large and ArtsAmica\nco-hosted many Havana in Hyde Park exhibits over the years and wanted to celebrate\nthe series. Havana in Hyde Park Revisited will delve back into the world of Cuban art\,\nfeaturing painting\, drawing and printmaking and will feature some previously exhibited\npieces along with some work not seen here before. The reception on Saturday\, June 14\nfrom 3 to 5 pm will feature a sale of prints on view in the Foyer Case.\nAbout the Print Making techniques used in this exhibit\nCollagraphy is a printmaking process in which materials are glued or sealed to a rigid\nsubstrate (such as paperboard or wood) to create a plate. Once inked\, the plate becomes a\ntool for imprinting the design onto paper or another medium.\nLithography is the process of printing from a flat surface treated so as to repel the ink\nexcept where it is required for printing.\nMixed Media; assemblages\, collages\, and sculpture are three common examples of art\nusing different media. Materials used to create mixed media art include\, but are not\nlimited to\, paint\, cloth\, paper\, wood and found objects.\nSerigraphy is a printing technique also known as screen printing\, silkscreen printing\, and\nother names. The term originates from the Latin word ‘seri’ meaning ‘silk’\, and the Greek\nword ‘graphos’\, which means ‘writing’.\nXerography (photocopying) is a technology using light and an electric charge to copy\nimages onto another sheet of paper invented in 1937

He has headlined venues in Bangkok\, Kuala Lumpur\, New York\, Boston\, Washington\, Seattle\, and Pittsburgh. His most recent albums include an experimental rock/jazz fusion recording called Hellbender and an album of jazz standards. The area is one of the most important wildlife habitats in Greater Boston and is used by dozens of species of birds\, mammals\, amphibians\, and fish\, including numerous threatened or endangered species. Unfortunately\, the meadow has fallen victim to litter and dumping\, and that’s why we need your help!

DESCRIPTION:Join the New England Poetry Club on March 23\, as we travel to the Menino Arts Center\, in Boston’s Hyde Park neighborhood! The reading begins at 2:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The Menino Arts Center\, located 26 Central Avenue\, is an accessible venue\, with a wheelchair ramp into the building and an elevator to the second floor. We’re grateful to Home Scholars of Boston for their generous sponsorship. \nRoman Johnson\, PhD  is a writer and scientist from Memphis\, TN. He is a Master of Fine Arts scholar in poetry at Brown University. He has a Ph.D. in Medical Sociology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham\, a M.A. in African American Studies from Georgia State University and obtained a B.A. in Political Science from Morehouse College. He is the co-founder of the New England Hoodoo Society.  He is the current Radical Reversal Poet in Residence at the Suffolk County House of Corrections in Boston\, Massachusetts. He is the winner of the Lucille Clifton Poetry Prize from Backbone Press and other prizes and fellowships.  \nJennifer Martelli has received fellowships from The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Monson Arts\, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Her work has appeared in The Academy of American Poets Poem-A-Day\, Poetry\, Best of the Net Anthology\, Braving the Body Anthology\, Verse Daily\, Plume\, The Tahoma Literary Review\, and elsewhere. She is the author of Psychic Party Under the Bottle Tree\, The Queen of Queens\, which won the Italian American Studies Association Book Award and was shortlisted for the Massachusetts Book Award\, and My Tarantella\, which was also shortlisted for the Massachusetts Book Award and named finalist for the Housatonic Book Award. Jennifer Martelli is co-poetry editor for MER. www.jennmartelli.com \nThe poems of Anastasia Vassos have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize\, Best of the Net\, and Best New Poets. She is the author of Nostos (2023)\, which was a finalist in Two Sylvias’ and Headlight Review’s Chapbook Contests\, and Nike Adjusting Her Sandal (2021). Her poems appear online as well as in print journals and anthologies; find her work in RHINO\, Whale Road Review\, Thrush\, Comstock Review\, and elsewhere. Her poems about the Greek-American diaspora have been translated into Greek. She is a reader for Lily Poetry Review\, speaks three languages\, and lives in Boston.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a curator’s talk and reception with ArtsAmica Founder Holliey White\, celebrating the exhibition: Havana in Hyde Park Revisited – Surrealism. \nPresented by Artists-at-Large with longtime friends and collaborators at ArtsAmica –– Havana in Hyde Park Revisited – Surrealism –– delves into the world of Surrealist Cuban art\, featuring paintings and drawings focused on dreams\, the unconscious\, the fantastical\, and the unconventional.  \nArtists-at-Large and ArtsAmica have co-hosted recurring Havana in Hyde Park exhibits for many years and wanted to honor and celebrate one genre within this amazing work. Havana in Hyde Park Revisited – Surrealism\nfeatures some previously exhibited pieces along with some work not seen here before. ArtsAmica was established in 1996 and has been bringing artwork to the United States from Cuba since its inception. The organization works to support the artists of Cuba directly. Artists-at-Large has worked with ArtsAmica since 2002. \nPresented by Artists-at-Large and ArtsAmica\, Havana in Hyde Park Revisited – Surrealism is on display until March 31\, 2025. \nAbout Cuban Art \nCuban art is a vibrant and diverse expression of the island’s rich cultural heritage\, influenced by its history\, politics\, and social changes. It encompasses a wide range of artistic forms\, including painting\, sculpture\, music\, dance\, and performance. \nCuban art has evolved significantly since the colonial period\, where European influences dominated. The early 20th century saw the emergence of modernism\, with artists like Wilfredo Lam incorporating Afro-Cuban themes and surrealism into their work. The African diaspora has profoundly shaped Cuban art\, particularly in music and visual arts. Artists often explore themes of identity\, spirituality\, and the blending of cultures through their work. \nThe Cuban Revolution of 1959 also had a significant impact on the art scene. The government promoted art as a means of fostering national identity and social change\, leading to the establishment of institutions that supported artists. This era produced politically charged works that reflected revolutionary ideals. \nToday\, Cuban artists continue to gain international recognition. They experiment with various media\, including installation and performance art. Artists like Tania Bruguera and Los Carpinteros challenge societal norms and explore themes of power\, identity\, and globalization. Key institutions\, such as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana\, play an essential role in preserving and promoting Cuban art. SUMMARY:First Annual Hyde Park Health and Wellness Summit: Equitable Healthcare at a Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for The First Annual Hyde Park Health and Wellness Summit: Equitable Healthcare at a Crossroads: Addressing Boston’s Medical Deserts – Starting in Hyde Park \nWhen: Saturday\, March 22\, 2025\nTime: 9am to 1:30pm\nWhere: The Pryde\, Hyde Park\, MA \nHyde Park residents have come together to address health disparities\, including limited access to primary care services\, preventative care\, and health education that challenge our\nneighborhood. We seek a responsive health care center that can begin to provide services\ntailored to the diverse needs of our community\, assisting those lacking health care options and\ndealing with maternal health\, chronic health\, and mental health issues. \n● Hyde Park had the highest infant mortality rate of any Boston neighborhood from 2012 –\n2021 (7.8 deaths per 1\,000 live births). The neighboring community of Roslindale had\nthe lowest infant mortality rate in the city (2.4 deaths per 1\,000 live births). \n● The burden of mental health illness in our community is significant – the percentage of\nHyde Park residents reporting anxiety\, 23.1%\, is over 9% greater than the city at large\nand Hyde Park’s suicide rate per 100\,000 people of 7%\, is 9.6% higher than the city at\nlarge. \n● 13.2% of Hyde Park residents have a disability\, over 5\,000 people \n● The rate of hospital encounters for asthma for Hyde Park residents is over 8% greater\nthan for the city at large. \n● Currently\, 9\,000 people in Hyde Park live below the federal poverty level\n.\n● Hyde Park has a higher percentage of both renters (49%) and homeowners (30%) who\nare more Housing Cost Burdened than those in the city at large. \n● Hyde Park has a significantly diverse makeup of the neighborhood\, which is 45.7 %\nBlack\, 24.7% Latino\, 21.9% White\, 2.2% Asian\, and 4.2% people of two or more races.\nThis substantiates the need for culturally relevant\, responsive\, and accessible health\ncare. \n● The recent closure of a nearby hospital has expanded the medical desert in the\ncommunity and created further urgency for a community health care center \nIt is essential that we bring services closer to home.
