SUMMARY:We two See Jazz ii
DESCRIPTION:Join Forbes Graham (trumpet) and John Dalton (percussion) in Menino Hall as they improvise together while Tommey improvises with them in paint. An evening of sonic and colorful exploration. Free and open to the public. \nAmong the many artists who have painted to jazz are Miles Davis\, Gina Southgate\, Jackson Pollock\, Jean-Michel Basquiat\, even Whitney Stanley\, who currently has a show at the ICA or local artist\, Betsy Hughes\, a long-time friend. Tommey will follow in that tradition and will spontaneously create on several canvases. Come watch and see what is inspired and transpires\, and is improvised and comes alive. \nForbes Graham is a composer\, musician\, sound artist\, and visual artist whose work explores themes of simultaneity\, perceptibility\, transformation and collage. He has appeared on over 40 albums\, primarily on trumpet\, but also on electronics. He is a member of Mobius Artists Group\, a collective of experimenting artists.\nhttps://www.forbesgrahammusic.com/ \nJohn Dalton is a Boston based percussionist\, composer\, and improviser who is a regular performer on the Boston scene\, as both a sideman and the leader of his own group\, “John Dalton’s Spheres of Influence.” John is an avid and experienced educator\, having taught music at Long Lake Camp for the Arts\, Bosse School of Music\, Bach to Rock\, and Morningside Music Studio.\nhttps://johndaltonspheresofinfluence.com/home \nA multi-disciplinary artist\, Tommey has a résumé that dates back to the 80s and continues to exhibit\, as well as presenting the work of others at the Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library via Artists-at-Large\, the organization he founded over 20 years ago. \nHome

SUMMARY:2nd Thursday Poetry Reading with Melinda Coppola\, Jean Dany Joachim\, Charlot Lucien
DESCRIPTION:This free poetry reading at the MAC will have an Open Mic before the featured speakers. Refreshments will be served. \nMelinda Coppola penned her first poem—about the color pink—at the tender age of 8. Her relationship with writing was mercurial for decades\, but once she learned that her blood type is\, in fact\, poet\, she settled into a kind of quiet cohabitation with her muses. Melinda’s poetry was nominated for Best of the Net and received the Songs of Eretz Reader’s Choice Award. Her work has appeared in Thimble Literary Magazine\, One Art: A Journal of Poetry\, Willows Wept Review\, Press 53\, Mutha Magazine\, Last Stanza Poetry Journal\, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising Kids on the Autism Spectrum\, and Amethyst Review\, among others. Her first full length collection\, Little Pockets of Glow\, is due out Fall 2025 from Kelsay Books. In addition to writing poetry\, she paints\, communes with stones on Cape Cod beaches\, and teaches Yogabilities™\, her own approach to Yoga for individuals with special needs. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband\, her daughter\, and a small herd of cats. www.melindacoppola.com \nJean Dany Joachim\, is a poet\, fiction-writer\, actor and playwright. He has five published collections of poetry and a play\, Chen Plenn (2007)\, Crossroads / Chimenkwaze (2013)\, Avec des Mots (2014)\, Quartier (2016)\, Your Voice Poet / Ta Voix Poète (2017)\, and La camisa blanca (2024). He created the Many Voices Project\, inspiring conversations about race and equality\, and he’s director of City Night Readings\, a series featuring diverse poetic and artistic talents. He serves on the Boards of the New England Poetry Club\, & Jean Appolon Expressions Dance Company. http://jeandanyjoachim.com \nCharlot Lucien is a poet\, storyteller\, and visual artist. His writings have been published in various anthologies and publications\, including the trilingual anthology of Haitian poetry “This Land\, My Beloved”\, Regard magazine\, Liberation Poetry\, Compost Magazine\, Revolution\, Anthologie des poètes français 2022\, Poètes à la Une\, and Tanbou Magazine. His poetry book La Tentation de l’Autre Rive (The Temptation of Other Shores) was released in 2013 by Trilingual Press. Several of his poems express his grappling with expressions of multiple identities as a Haitian who experienced migration and negotiates multiple literary and linguistic influences from Haiti\, France and Africa as a whole. He is also the founder of the Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts; he has affiliation with the New England Poetry Club\, La société de poètes français\, et Poètes à la Une; and in his regular line of work he is a public health manager and a history instructor at the OLLI Institute of the University of Massachusetts\, Boston. \nMore info on MAC poetry readings at http://www.hpaa-mac.org/poetry-readings/.

SUMMARY:HADESTOWN: TEEN EDITION
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE\nWelcome to Hadestown\, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha\, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always. \nHadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice\, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature\, doubt against faith\, and fear against love. Performed by the School at RTW Teens. Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

SUMMARY:The Trap Dorz and Nocturnal Adoration Society performs @ The MAC
DESCRIPTION:The Trap Dorz play original songs by former rocker Andy Hollinger\, who has since moved on to playing quieter instruments. He sings and juggles the mandolin\, plectrum banjo\, and acoustic guitar while bandmates Rob Emslie (piano\, guitar\, heavenly harmonies) and Jarpo Born (hothouse harmonica) bring the rootsy songs to life\, playing a mix of old and new tunes\, including some from The Trap Dorz’s upcoming release later this summer. Their previous two releases are available at lowbudgetrecords.com and on various streaming platforms. \nFor those who like their pigeonholes neat and tidy\, Jimmy Ryan is an unsettling proposition. He plays mandolin with the old-timey pluck of a bluegrass breakdown\, but also with the ferocity of rock guitarist. He puts the “man” in mandolin. That melding of styles made Ryan an esteemed pioneer of the local “alt-country” brigade in the ’80 & ’90s when he founded and fronted the bluegrass-tinged rock band The Blood Oranges with the same eclectic approach\, making him one of the most dynamic singer-songwriters on the rich Boston Americana scene today. His partner-in-Life\, bassist Donna Sartanowicz possesses a silky mellow voice that has a way of slowing the heartbeat and lowering blood pressure. Nocturnal Adoration Society\, their fascinating musical fusion duo of original songs\, speak to mature life experiences\, grounded in hard won wisdom and a partnership that has stood the test of time.

SUMMARY:Eric Royer’s One Man Band and Homefried Valentines
DESCRIPTION:Eric Royer\, long time Dorchester resident\, has performed as Royer’s One-Man Band since the mid-90s. He has recorded and traveled extensively after building his one-of-a-kind self-made music contraption The Guitar Machine which allows him to play guitar\, bass and drums while picking finger style guitar or banjo with his hands and singing and playing harmonica. Royer has won a Boston music award for Best Roots Act as the banjo player in his band The Resophonics and has played and recorded with many Boston based bluegrass bands. http://guitarmachine.com \nHomefried Valentines are a husband and wife duo playing original music with an eclectic Pop/Rock vibe on a combination of instruments – electric tenor ukulele\, electric guitar\, and cocktail kit drums. Musicians Michael and Carla Eigen have each been nominated for local Boston music awards. The New England Music Awards nominated Michael Eigen for Roots Act of the Year as a singer-songwriter and drummer for the band Los Goutos. Carla Eigen was a nominee for Outstanding Local Female Vocalist by the Boston Music Awards as the front woman for the band Sextiles. Both Michael and Carla have been active members in the local Boston scene for 20+ years in various separate projects prior to spinning off to create a post pandemic duo. Based out of West Roxbury\, the couple also splits their living and music playing time with Readsboro\, Vermont. https://homefriedvalentines.com

SUMMARY:Hyde Park Book Club: Before the Coffee Gets Cold @BPL
DESCRIPTION:Join the Book Club as we discuss Oshikazu Kawaguchi’s Before the Coffee Gets Cold.  \nIn a small back alley in Tokyo\, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time. Meet four visitors\, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-traveling offer\, to: confront the man who left them\, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early-onset Alzheimer’s\, to see their sister one last time\, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know. But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat\, they cannot leave the café\, and finally\, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold.  \n\nAccessibility Notice: We strive to make our events accessible. To request a disability accommodation and/or language services\, contact the department listed in the “Contact Info” pane on the right. Please allow at least two weeks to arrange accommodation.
