His spoken word pieces explore love\, longing\, societal disconnection\, and the human capacity for resilience\, blending sharp observation with a raw emotional honesty. Wallace’s voice has been shaped by lived experience and deep reflection\, capturing moments of intimacy\, struggle\, and revelation with precision and care. Whether performed on stage or shared through writing\, his work invites audiences to pause\, reflect\, and confront the truths we often leave unspoken. \nHeather Nelson first studied poetry in college\, where she developed her thesis project under the guidance of C. D. Wright and Peter Gizzi at Brown University in 1994. She returned to writing in 2011 and has since been published in Ekphrastic Review\, Lily Poetry Review\, Spoon River Review and others. Her first book\, Motherland\, was published by Kelsay Books in 2025. She currently leads a local free-write\, runs writing workshops for high school students and hosts a book group in Cambridge\, Mass. She has been active in the Boston area literary scene\, and has taught classes at Grub Street\, planned events for Litcrawl\, as well as organized author talks and other activities. \nAlan Smith Soto\, born in San José\, Costa Rica grew up there and in the U.S. in a bilingual family. The author of four books of poems\, Fragmentos de alcancía (1998)\, Libro del lago (2014)\, Hasta que no haya luna (2021) and Templo (2024)\, his poetry in English has appeared in Blue Unicorn (2021)\, Essential Voices -A Covid-19 Anthology (2023)\, The Winter Anthology (2024) and The Arts Fuse (2025). His translation of Robert Creeley’s Life and Death (Vida y muerte) was published in 2000 (Madrid: Árdora). His play\, César y Federico was premiered in Madrid in October\, 2025. His plays Pilatos and El regalo will be premiered in May\, 2025 in Madrid.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring M.P. Carver and Jennifer Jean \nM.P. Carver is a poet and visual artist from Salem\, MA. She is Director of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival\, miCrO-Founder of Molecule: a tiny lit mag\, a member of the Thursday Poets\, and teaches writing at Salem State University. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in SWIMM\, Rattle\, and Mantis\, among others. She has received funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the Essex Community Foundation. In 2023 her poem “In Vitro” was named a finalist in the Connecticut River Review’s Experimental Poetry Contest\, and in 2022\, her poem “You & God & I” was awarded the New England Poetry Club’s E.E. Cummings Prize.  Her chapbook\, Selachipmorpha\, was published by Incessant Pipe in 2015\, and a chapbook with Lily Poetry Review Books\, Hard Up\, is available now from Lily Poetry Review Books. \nJennifer Jean’s poetry collections include VOZ\, Object Lesson\, and The Fool. Her resource book is Object Lesson: a Guide to Writing Poetry. Along with Iraqi poet Hanaa Ahmad Jabr\, she’s co-written and co-translated a correspondence in Arabic and English poems\, titled Where do you live? أين‭ ‬تعيشين؟. (Arrowsmith\, 2025). As well\, she’s the editor of Other Paths for Shahrazad: a Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Poetry by Arab Women (Tupelo\, 2026). Her work appears in POETRY\, Rattle\, On the Seawall\, The Common\, and the Los Angeles Review; as well as on The Slowdown Podcast and in the Academy of American Poets “Poem-a-Day” series. She’s received honors from the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop\, the Mass Cultural Council\, and the Women’s Federation for World Peace. Known for her‬ mastery of metaphor\, she redefined herself as‬ Navah the Buddaphliii‬‭ —pronounced‬ “butterfly”—a name that reflects her deep belief‬ in transformation and her role as a catalyst for‬ change in the world.‬ Aﬀectionately called‬‭ The Duchess of Double‬ Entendres‬‭ \, Navah is celebrated as a‬ poet-prophet\, a warrior of words\, and an‬ nwavering source of inspiration. Her social‬ media series\,‬‭ Navahism‬‭ \, has garnered a‬ devoted following through its blend of clever‬ aﬃrmations and empowering reflections.‬ Her body of work includes‬‭ Black Cocaine and‬ Colorless Butterflies‬‭ \, a collection that solidified‬ her place in the poetry community and brought‬ her recognition from the City of Boston as well‬ as the Atlanta poetry scene. Over the years\, she‬ has performed at both intimate venues and‬ prestigious theaters\, captivating audiences with‬ her raw honesty\, lyrical brilliance\, and‬ unapologetic storytelling. A mother of five and a devoted partner\, Navah‬ continues to balance her artistic pursuits with‬ her commitment to family. Through her abstract‬ writing workshops in colleges and‬ collaborations with poets worldwide\, she fosters‬ the next generation of literary voices while‬ promoting the power of art and activism.‬ \n‭ \nEddy Toussaint Tontongi is a poet\, critic and essayist who writes in Haitian\, French and English. His latest books include Tyaka Poetica (2021); La Parole indomptée / Memwa Baboukèt (“The Untamed Speech / Memory of The Muzzle\,” 2015)\, published by L’Harmattan in Paris\, France; and In the Beast’s Alley (2013)\, a collection in English of his “poems of conscience.” Tontongi’s book Critique de la francophonie haïtienne (L’Harmattan\, 2007) is considered by as a seminal critique of linguistic power relations in Haiti. Tontongi has just completed his French collection of essays\, Le Regard de l’Autre\, using the critical investigative perspective which he calls reverse anthropology\, the reverse gaze of the Other\, the oppressed\, upon the oppressors. A look from the South to the North. Tontongi’s latest collection of poems is Gaze of Thunder\, scheduled to be released in the Summer of 2025. Tontongi is Editor in Chief of the publishing house Trilingual Press and the trilingual politico-literary journal Tanbou (www.tanbou.com). Eddy will read from his newly released collection of poems “Gaze of Thunder” (Trilingual Press\, October 2025).

Refreshments will be served. \nMelinda Coppola penned her first poem—about the color pink—at the tender age of 8. Her relationship with writing was mercurial for decades\, but once she learned that her blood type is\, in fact\, poet\, she settled into a kind of quiet cohabitation with her muses. Melinda’s poetry was nominated for Best of the Net and received the Songs of Eretz Reader’s Choice Award. Her work has appeared in Thimble Literary Magazine\, One Art: A Journal of Poetry\, Willows Wept Review\, Press 53\, Mutha Magazine\, Last Stanza Poetry Journal\, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising Kids on the Autism Spectrum\, and Amethyst Review\, among others. Her first full length collection\, Little Pockets of Glow\, is due out Fall 2025 from Kelsay Books. In addition to writing poetry\, she paints\, communes with stones on Cape Cod beaches\, and teaches Yogabilities™\, her own approach to Yoga for individuals with special needs. Signup will be that night before the reading.** \nGeorge Kalogeris’s most recent book of poems is Winthropos\, (Louisiana State University\, 2021). His poems and translations have been anthologized in Joining Music with Reason\, chosen by Christopher Ricks (Waywiser\, 2010). He is the winner of the James Dickey Poetry Prize\, the Stephen J. Meringoff Award\, and the Sheila Margaret Motton Prize. \nGrace Massey is a poet\, classical ballet and Baroque dancer\, gardener\, and socializer of feral cats. Grace was a social studies editor at Pearson Education for many years and has degrees in English from Smith College and Boston University. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals\, including Quartet\, Thimble\, Lily Poetry Review\, One Art\, RockPaperPoem\, and Ibbetson Street. Her chapbook\, A Future with Bromeliads\, was a finalist in the Moonstone Arts Center chapbook contest and the Jessie Bryce Niles chapbook contest. He’s published five books of poetry\, a collection of his music reviews\, and has edited three volumes devoted to the works of Elizabeth Bishop. Among his honors are the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism\, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, NEA\, and Academy of American Poets for his poetry. His poems have been selected for the Pushcart Prize\, The Best American Poetry\, and The Best of the Best American Poetry. His next collection\, “Artur Schnabel and Josepf Szigeti Play Mozart at the Frick Collection (April 4\, 1948)” and other poems will appear next year from Arrowsmith Press. \nMark Walsh is an English professor at Massasoit Community College in Brockton\, MA\, where he teaches literature and philosophy. Recently\, he was the head judge of the selection committee for the City of Brockton’s first-ever Youth Poet Laureate. He is an associate editor for The Lily Poetry Review\, and his journalism has appeared in The South Shore News & The Marshfield Mariner. DESCRIPTION:Magdalena Gómez\, Poet Laureate of Springfield\, MA (2019-2022) and an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow (2021-2022) has been a cultural worker since 1976. Her memoir noir\, Mi’ja\, received the 2024 International Latino Book Award\, in the autobiography category. In 2019 she received the Latinas 50 Plus Literature Award at Fordham University and the Latinx Excellence on the Hill Award from the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus of MA at the State House. Her solo play on iconoclastic Puerto Rican labor leader\, activist\, feminist and journalist Luisa Capetillo\, (October 28\, 1879 – April 10\, 1922) is included in The Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance (2024). Ms. Gómez has been a volunteer writer for An African American Point of View for over fourteen years. She was the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Springfield’s first intergenerational Latinx theater\, Teatro V!da and the youth open mic series\, Ign!te the M!c – from 2006 – 2020. She also initiated and helped launch the first public  LGBTQIA2S+ open mic series in Western Massachusetts at the Bing Arts Center. She is currently working on the sequel to her memoir\, a new collection of poetry\, and a new multi-media solo show based on her memoir. Alvarez is the author of the poetry collection Makeshift Altar (2024) and the co-editor of Essential Voices: A COVID-19 Anthology (2023). Selected as one of 2022’s Best New Poets\, her poetry has appeared in Ploughshares\, The Missouri Review\, Alaska Quarterly Review\, Poetry Foundation\, Colorado Review\, and elsewhere. She has been awarded fellowships from CantoMundo\, VONA\, Macondo\, the Virginia Creative Arts Center\, and the Furious Flower Poetry Center. In 2022\, she was inducted as an Affrilachian Poet. Amy was born in New York City to Jamaican and Puerto Rican parents. She has taught at high schools in the Bronx\, New York\, and Boston\, Massachusetts\, and at West Virginia University. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 12\, 2024\, 7 – 9 pm\nFeaturing Kevin Gallagher\, Magdalena Gomez\, and Vijaya Sundaram\n\n \nKevin Gallagher is a poet\, publisher and political economist living in the Greater Boston Area.  His latest books are And Yet it Moves and The Wild Goose.  Gallagher edits\, spoKe\, a boston-based annual of poetry and poetics.  He works as a professor of global development policy at Boston University. \n\nMagdalena Gómez\, Poet Laureate of Springfield\, MA (2019-2022) and an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow (2021-2022) has been a cultural worker since 1976. Her memoir noir\, Mi’ja\, received the 2024 International Latino Book Award\, in the autobiography category. In 2019 she received the Latinas 50 Plus Literature Award at Fordham University and the Latinx Excellence on the Hill Award from the Black and Latino Legislative Caucus of MA at the State House. Her solo play on iconoclastic Puerto Rican labor leader\, activist\, feminist and journalist Luisa Capetillo\, (October 28\, 1879 – April 10\, 1922) is included in The Routledge Companion to Latine Theatre and Performance (2024). Ms. Gómez has been a volunteer writer for An African American Point of View for over fourteen years. She was the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Springfield’s first intergenerational Latinx theater\, Teatro V!da and the youth open mic series\, Ign!te the M!c – from 2006 – 2020. She also initiated and helped launch the first public  LGBTQIA2S+ open mic series in Western Massachusetts at the Bing Arts Center. She is currently working on the sequel to her memoir\, a new collection of poetry\, and a new multi-media solo show based on her memoir. Ms. Gómez is currently a Commissioner with the Massachusetts Commission in the Status of Women for Hampden County and a Trustee with the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts.  www.mijamemoir.com \n\n\n\n\nVijaya Sundaram is the current Poet Laureate (2023-2025) for the City of Medford\, Massachusetts.  Originally from India\, she lived in Arlington\, MA\, for ten years\, and has been living in Medford since 2001.  She has written short stories\, plays and a short novel (not yet published).  She is also a guitarist\, sitarist\, songwriter\, singer\, amateur digital artist\, and educator.  Her poetry and short pieces have appeared in publications like The Rising Phoenix Press\, the Stardust Review\, and TELL Magazine\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a seasonal wine and poetry event conducted by MAC Poetry Coordinator Linda Carney-Goodrich and local wine importer Migen Hasanaj of Carpe Vinum of Jamaica Plain. \nFive seasonal poems will be read by five guest readers and complemented by five wines\, all listed below. DESCRIPTION:2nd Thursday Poetry Reading with Danielle Legros Georges and Nakia Hill \n\nThis free poetry reading at the MAC will have an Open Mic before the featured speakers. \nDanielle Legros Georges is a poet\, literary translator\, and editor whose work has been supported by fellowships from the American Antiquarian Society\, the PEN/Heim Translation Fund\, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Boston Foundation\, and the Black Metropolis Research Consortium. She was appointed Boston’s second Laureate in 2014\, and has authored several books of poetry including The Dear Remote Nearness of You; Island Heart\, translations of the poems of 20th-century Haitian-French poet Ida Faubert; Wheatley at 250: Black Women Poets Re-imagine the Verse of Phillis Wheatley Peters; and most recently Blue Flare: Three Haitian Poets (translations\, Zephyr Press\, 2024); and the forthcoming Three Leaves\, Three Roots: Poems on the Haiti-Congo Story (Beacon Press\, 2025). https://www.daniellelegrosgeorges.com \nNakia Hill is a writer\, poet\, journalist\, and educator.
